Guidance
No quantitative guidance issued; management expects home broadband net adds to recover to old rates in the next couple of quarters after a one-time quality correction.
What management committed to
- [Home broadband] net adds growth rate should return to old rates in the next quarter and the quarter after. — old rates, Q2FY27-Q3FY27
- Management will spend adequate money to drive competitive and profitable growth [in Bharti Hexacom circles] if needed, given comfortable net debt/EBITDA.
Key themes
Quality-led growth with disciplined home broadband expansion.
How the narrative shifted
- Home broadband quality over quantity: Management tightened acquisition quality in FWA after seeing higher churn and weaker economics; the resulting moderation in net adds is a temporary correction, with fiber-first pivot positioning the business for sustainable growth.
- ARPU premiumization and postpaid push: ARPU growth driven by upgrading customers to unlimited plans, postpaid expansion, and rising data consumption; long-term architecture repair needed for sustained growth.
- Challenging terrain, tailored network deployment: Rajasthan and Northeast circles have difficult terrain and require a nuanced mix of wireless and wireline infrastructure, influencing capex and network rollout strategy.
- Energy cost efficiency via solar: Seasonal solar generation and rising solar site count are helping moderate energy costs; diesel price increases have not yet fully flowed through.
- Convergence bundling (IPTV + broadband): Home broadband increasingly bundled with IPTV content to drive adoption and reduce churn, with no separate DTV segment; IPTV rollout contributing to depreciation uptick.
- Balance sheet strength enabling investments: Net debt/EBITDAaL at 0.2x provides headroom to fund 5G densification, fiberization, and home broadband growth; management emphasizes competitive and profitable growth.
Operational commentary
- Home broadband acquisition strategy tightened: poor quality FWA acquisitions pulled back, pivot to fiber-first with FWA only where fiber inaccessible; net adds moderated to 75k but correction expected temporary.
- Mobile ARPU at ₹259 benefiting from premiumization, postpaid additions, and an extra day; 3.3M smartphone customer adds, postpaid penetration gradually improving.
- 5G densification, network modernization, and fiberization remain key capex priorities; IPTV rollout underway and bundled with home broadband to drive convergence.
- Energy costs benefited from seasonal solar generation and one-offs; full diesel price increase impact not yet flowed through in Q1.
- Net debt/EBITDAaL improved to 0.2x; strong balance sheet to fund competitive and profitable growth.
Analyst Q&A
Q. How many of the 400 relevant FTTH cities fall in Bharti Hexacom circles, and what is the absolute number of homes opportunity?
My sense is it would be close to about 15 or 17 of them, but I will have to get back to you on that. The demographics are difficult terrain, so a combination of wireless and wireline is a good strategy.
Q. Why has mobile subscriber net add trend been weaker this quarter compared to historical trends?
There is a certain seasonality in customer depletions both in the industry and in each operating company. We see a higher trend of customer additions towards the second half of the year.
Q. Has management internally revised its mid-term outlook on home broadband growth or internal targets given the acquisition policy changes and chipset price rise?
There is no fundamental change in the assumption of how big the market is, how we need to gain share, or how we need to price our offerings. The quarter reflects a correction in acquisition quality, and we expect unwinding of this change.
Q. Why have energy costs declined YoY for Hexacom despite higher diesel prices?
Primarily seasonal impact from solar-based towers and some one-offs in the quarter. The full impact of diesel price increase has not been seen because tanks still held diesel stock. Underlying trend is more or less the same.
